London's 'white slaves'

As Britain commemorates the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade, new research traces the stories of the first batch of slaves sent to the colonies in America - not black Africans but white children from London.

A new book, White Cargo, tells how children as young as 10 were swept off the city's streets and sent with convicts to work in America several months before the first shipment of African captives arrived in 1619. Authors Don Jordan and Michael Walsh say hundreds of homeless children were rounded up and held in the Bridewell, a workhouse and prison near Blackfriars Bridge.

But, to disguise the fact these children were to be enslaved, officials sold it as giving the underprivileged a new life. In truth, the City of London wanted to get rid of their street children while the merchants behind the company colonising Virginia wanted slave labour.

Actually, the first slaves in history are white. The word slave is derived from the word Slavic.

Heck yeah, a holiday would be great. If our people had to pick our people's cotton and tobacco, the least we could do is give our selves a holiday.

Sorry, the Redman took slaves in raids when it was easy. Also in the south , check the history of South and Central America for the first slaves. And maybe the first to be "invited" for dinner. [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

so who were the first slaves? I assume there were slaves before Egyptian pharoahs enslaved the Israelites?

According to conservative estimates there are about 27 million slaves worldwide today. Far more than any other time in history.

Slavery goes back to before civilization and written history.

Every culture and every race have used slaves at some point in their history.

The first abolitionist newspaper in U.S. history was published in Jonesborough Tn.

Hmm ... the first slaves sent to the colonies were white you say? I can believe that. I did some researching of my geneology and discovered that one side of my family is decended from exiled rulers in Wales, who, funny enough, had sold the other side of my family into slavery right before the ousting. My father's ancestors sold my mother's ancestory. How do you apologize for that?
